Our Journey

1885

The legacy of the Six Brothers begins
with the birth of the first brother.

  • 1902

    Our founder,
    Jehangirji Behramji is born.

  • 1922

    Our founders’ unbridled passion
for fine spirits leads the brothers on
    an ambitious journey of establishing
one of India’s first distilleries in Aswa,
    commencing production of spirits
made from rare flowers and tropical fruits.

  • 1929

    Our founders establish distilleries
in the princely states of Jawhar and Akkalkot.

  • 1949

The Maharashtra Prohibition Act is enforced,
putting an abrupt end to our operations.

  • 1972

    Prohibition is abolished.

  • 1975

    Our founder’s spirit remains unwavering
    after prohibition.
He finds the strength to press on,
    determined to overcome every obstacle
in his path and revives one of India’s oldest
    distilleries in Aswa, Dahanu.

  • 1984

Mr. Viraf Chinoy, the 3rd generation of the family,
pays a rich tribute to our founder’s vision by setting up
South Seas Distilleries to produce fine malt spirits.
Production commences and the legacy lives on.

  • 1990

Top-of-the-line technology for pot still distillation
    is sourced from Stewart McBain, Scotland;
We start setting up Copper Pot Stills
for the distillation of malt whiskies.

  • 1995

We step up our supply of high quality malt spirits,
masterfully crafted and matured in rare oak casks,
    to national and global business.

  • 1999

Small batches of rare single malts are masterfully
crafted for a sophisticated flavour profile, unlike
any other, earning rich accolades in India and across
    continents from world-renowned Master Distillers.

  • 2005

We expand further to install India’s largest
    Copper Pot Stills for distillation.
The unique size of these stills enables us
to capture the essence of the raw ingredients,
    transforming them into refined spirits
with distinctive profiles while elevating our
    production capacities.

  • 2007

Despite the nascent market for single malts,
we took a bold step by expanding our maturation capacity further
with the construction of India's largest maturation warehouse.
We started maturing whisky in a wide array of casks,
even though the market wasn't completely ready for the idea.

  • 2018

One of the world’s largest conglomerates
entrusts us for their foray into the realm
    of Indian single malts.

  • 2023

Introducing Crazy Cock Single Malt Whisky,
served in two exquisite expressions - “RARE” and “DHUA”.
These exceptional whiskies are crafted with skills honed
    across four generations.
